Curiosity can lead to delightful discoveries, and this was exactly what happened with my niece, A. Each time we drove past the sign for the Spark Samar Tourism Information and Pasalubong Center, her curiosity grew. The signboard had always caught her eye.

So, we made a plan. On our next journey from Tacloban to Catbalogan, we would make a detour to uncover the secrets of this intriguing spot. Tucked away just off the main road, near the iconic San Juanico Bridge, but as we turned onto the small road leading to the center, we felt a mix of excitement and uncertainty.

As we hesitated outside the unassuming building, wondering if it was even open, our doubts were quickly dispelled. We were greeted by the warm smiles of two charming women whose hospitality shone as brightly as the Samar sun. (Hello! I hope this message finds you both in good spirits. I must apologize, as amidst the hustle of traveling from place to place, I’ve unfortunately misplaced the paper with your names on it that you handed to me). Their friendliness was as welcoming as a cool breeze on a hot day, and their eagerness to assist us made us feel right at home.

The signage outside may read "San Juanico by the Bay Tourism Information Center", but within its walls, you'll also find the Spark Samar Tourism Information and Pasalubong Center. This shared space is a strategic collaboration aimed at enhancing the tourism experience in Samar. The San Juanico by the Bay Tourism Information Center is part of a larger community-based tourism project that includes the San Juan by the Bay Floating Restaurant and Boardwalk. This initiative not only provides a delightful dining experience with local dishes but also educates visitors about the local culture and supports the livelihood of the Samar people.

The center, which officially opened its doors on December 1, 2022, is a treasure trove of Samar's rich cultural heritage. It is a hub of local culture and flavors. It's where the vibrant weaving tradition of the region comes alive through lara-banig products, showcasing the intricate artistry of Samar's weavers. But that's not all; the center is also a culinary gateway, offering a taste of the province with provincial delicacies crafted by the skilled hands of the Association of Samar Producers (ASAP).

As we wandered through the rooms, we were captivated by the intricate Banig and weaving products. From vibrant bags and cozy slippers to sturdy baskets, stylish hats, and traditional sleeping mats, each piece told a story of the century-old weaving traditions of Basey, Samar. This small community has hands that weave not just products, but also the threads of their history and culture.

The artisans of Basey are masters of their craft, renowned for their tikog banig mats and other woven wonders. Their skillful hands transform simple materials into beautiful, functional art. But the center's allure doesn't stop at textiles. We also discovered wood-carved treasures like sungka boards and grand containers fit for a feast's lechon.

As we explored further, our senses were treated to a symphony of local flavors. One corner of the center showcased the tangy delight of coco wine, the sharp zest of coco vinegar, and the authentic taste of sukang waray. Another section was a crunchy paradise with tahong chips, banana chips, camote chips, and more. The corioso cookies and salvaro were a sweet reminder of Samar's culinary diversity.

In a collaborative effort, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has joined forces with the center to champion the One Town One Product (OTOP) program. This initiative shines a spotlight on each town's unique offerings, allowing them to share their 'pride-of-place' products with both locals and visitors alike.

The center isn't just a marketplace; it's a valuable information  for anyone eager to explore Samar's tourist sites. Whether you're a foodie in search of the next delectable bite or a traveler on the lookout for authentic local products, the Spark Samar Pasalubong Center is your starting point to discover the wonders of Samar.

Our visit to the Spark Samar Tourism Information and Pasalubong Center was an unexpected highlight of our journey. It was a place where every item had a story, every flavor had a history, and every encounter was a memory in the making.
