A Timeless Christmas Holiday Experience at Manila Hotel

The New Year has passed, but the Manila Hotel continues to radiate the magic of Christmas. Walking into its grand lobby, we were greeted by a breathtaking sight: a towering Christmas tree adorned with twinkling lights and sparkling ornaments. This year’s theme, Pasko Natin!, pays homage to Filipino traditions, weaving together heritage and holiday cheer in the most mesmerizing way.

The intricate décor, featuring the iconic salakot (a traditional Filipino headgear) and native materials, painted the space with cultural pride. The salakot is a traditional Filipino headgear made of woven materials like rattan or bamboo, often shaped into a wide-brimmed hat.

Historically worn by farmers and fishermen to protect themselves from the sun and rain, it has become a symbol of Filipino heritage and resilience. Beyond its practicality, the salakot represents the resourcefulness and creativity of Filipino craftsmanship, blending function with cultural pride. Today, it is often used in cultural displays and celebrations, showcasing its timeless charm and significance in Filipino identity.

The bold red accents added a touch of festive elegance, perfectly encapsulating the spirit of the season. It was as if the Manila Hotel had extended Christmas just for us—a nostalgic and heartwarming gesture that resonated deeply.

Willy the Bear: A Symbol of Hope

Seating proudly in the grand lobby is a giant plush mascot, Willy the Bear. Beyond his adorable presence lies a story that stirs the soul. During World War II, much of Manila was devastated, including the Manila Hotel. Amid the ruins, a child’s toy collection, including Willy, remained miraculously unscathed.

Today, Willy is more than a charming figure; he’s a testament to resilience and hope. From surviving the war to becoming a symbol of perseverance during the pandemic, Willy’s legacy reminds us of our collective strength. Guests of all ages stopped to take photos, a quiet acknowledgment of the inspiring history he represents.

Indulgence at the Delicatessen

Before heading to lunch, we couldn’t resist exploring the Manila Hotel’s famed Delicatessen. Its festive selection was a feast for the senses. Wreath-shaped macarons, traditional fruitcakes, stollen bread, pralines, and Santa Claus-themed chocolates were beautifully displayed, each treat more tempting than the last. Perfect for gifting or savoring with coffee, these delicacies capture the essence of the holiday season in every bite.

A Culinary Journey at Café Ilang-Ilang

Our day continued with a sumptuous buffet lunch at Café Ilang-Ilang, the hotel’s renowned dining destination. At PHP 3,295 per head, it’s an investment in a truly global dining experience. The buffet features eight live cooking stations, each showcasing cuisines from around the world.

From artisanal pasta to sizzling Chinese noodles and charcuterie boards, the variety was staggering. The Churrasco station served perfectly grilled meats.

For Filipino food enthusiasts, Café Ilang-Ilang offers a mouthwatering selection of beloved classics. Indulge in dishes like inihaw na lumot (grilled squid), guisadong sitaw at kalabasa (stir-fried string beans and squash), and the rich, savory lengua estofado (braised ox tongue).

And then, there’s the showstopper—the lechon. Revealing tender, flavorful meat seasoned to perfection. This iconic Filipino dish takes center stage, evoking memories of festive gatherings and family celebrations. At Café Ilang-Ilang, their lechon is prepared with exceptional care, ensuring every bite is a culinary delight. It’s a must-try centerpiece that brings a true taste of tradition to your plate!

The open Pan-Asian kitchen added an immersive touch, with chefs creating culinary masterpieces. Despite the grandeur, the atmosphere was warm and inviting—a perfect setting for family gatherings or romantic dates.

The dessert station was a haven for those with a sweet tooth, offering an irresistible array of treats. Decadent cakes and pastries took center stage, alongside an assortment of delightful swepets, fresh fruits, and creamy artisanal ice cream in various flavors. The buko salad—a personal favorite—stood out with its refreshing and nostalgic taste, while the kakanin (traditional Filipino rice delicacies) added a local flair.

What made this station truly special were the golden ilang-ilang décor accents, which always mesmerized me. Their intricate beauty and elegant glow made the dessert station the most visually appealing among all. It was not just a feast for the palate but also a delight for the eyes—a perfect ending to an unforgettable dining experience.

For those seeking a more exclusive dining experience, Café Ilang-Ilang offers private rooms perfect for any occasion.
